The Research Campus STIMULATE has developed a long-term research program. It is initially focused on oncological and neurological applications. The research takes place in medical research groups -on one hand with a special focus on oncological or neurological application and on the other hand with overall orientation. The medical groups are flanked by medical-clinical integration groups.
The focus area oncology deals with two main sub-goals. On the one hand, an integrated high-tech operating room shall be constructed based on multi-standard MRI devices for the routine, image-guided minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of tumors and metastases of the abdomen and especially of the liver. During the project period, the holistic therapy approach shall be demonstrated on the model. Furthermore, individual components are already transferred into clinical practice. The second sub-goal is the development of a robot-assisted surgery room for high-precision treatment of tumors and metastases of the spine. Here, an angiography system, a lightweight robot and a navigation system for image-guided minimally invasive treatment of spinal tumors and metastases shall be realized by means of radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The three research groups Clinical Integration (OI), interventional MR imaging (OB) and MR tools (OT) are specifically aligned to this focus.
The focus area neurology is also subdivided in two main sub-goals during the project period. Firstly, an interventional operating room is to be established as a central place of stroke acute therapy (one stop shop) and aneurysm therapy for fast, efficient and safe treatment of these diseases. Here it is important to extend the functionality of the system to a low-contrast angiography and perfusion imaging resolution and provide technologies (CFD simulation and analysis, flow diverter design, planning tools) for the development of patient-specific vascular grafts. The second sub-goal deals with the provision of brain-controlled prostheses for severely disabled persons after stroke for participation in daily life. The focus will be on providing an EcoG-controlled robot arm, which takes over a simple task yet to be defined, such as reliably gripping and leading a cup to the mouth. The research groups Clinical Integration (NI), C-arm Imaging (NB), Tools, Hemodynamics (NT) and Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI) deal with these tasks.
Application-spanning research groups with a wide range of expertise in robotics and medical imaging complement the medical technology and integration groups, and provide technologies that are used in the research groups of both clinical focus areas. Structurally, this includes the research groups Robotics (RB), Image Processing and Visualization (BV), Therapy Planning and Navigation (PN).
The service group Transfer, Services, Intellectual Property Rights (TR) pursues the objective to provide professional business services, manage inventions and intellectual property rights and organize the transfer of research results to the enterprises.
The pre-phase of the project took place from 01.01.2013 to 28.02.2014. Further information to pre-phase
