Image processing / visualization (BV)

The research group image processing / visualization takes on the service tasks for the application group and the other groups of the cross-sectional Research Campus STIMULATE in close cooperation with them. The focus is primarily in the areas of segmentation, registration, visualization and multimodal flow visualization. As a result, already existing techniques which depend on the medical applications are developed and closely adapted to the area, but also completely new algorithms are implemented.

The AP 1 deals with the "multimodal visualization of CT / MRI / PET data", which are frequently acquired to collect the metabolic and structural characteristics of the tumor. Here, an interactive visualization is realized, which in turn allows the physician an interactive analysis of the data.

As part of the AP 2, an appropriate "visualization of robot paths in multimodal data" is being developed. The visualization techniques used here are adjusted based on the results of the AP 1 for intraoperative multimodal image data.

For the AP 3 "Visualization CFD blood flow simulation" the research group develops interdisciplinary methods for the flow visualization. Therefore, flow patterns such as helical flow or embedded flow should be described mathematically, detected automatically and highlighted. Such measurements are relevant for a wide range of pathologies of the cardiovascular system and should be transmitted on the neurovascular system.

In AP 4 "pre- and intraoperative registration" the focus is on the robust and precise intraoperative data registration. A first area of application is the ablation of metastases in the vertebral bodies where preoperative MRI and intraoperative CT data are combined.

The AP 5 "vertebral segmentation" includes the detection and segmentation of vertebrae in MRI data. At this, an extension of existing solutions is the segmentation of the spinal canal, whereby an improved the initialization of the actual vertebral segmentation is implemented.
