Profile

Image-guided minimally invasive methods for the diagnosis and treatment of age-related common diseases such as stroke, cardiovascular diseases, tumors and dementias are in the centre of research interest of STIMULATE. Miniaturized devices such as catheters, needles and electrodes are used for the patient-friendly surgical procedures.

The precise navigation and control of the procedure requires the use of external imaging methods such as X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The technical effort for these image-guided minimally invasive interventions is immense: in addition to the development of special miniaturized instruments, imaging decices must be moved into the sterile operating room. Moreover, their functionality has to be extended, so that the control and tracking of the instrument on its way to the destination allows both accurate real-time and exact images of the surgical field at the same time.
