The research group Interventional MR imaging is to create the conditions for continuous MR guidance and control of percutaneous tumor ablations.
In AP 1 "Interventional real time imaging", in cooperation with the project partner Siemens Healthcare GmbH, which has many years of experience and relevant expertise in the field of sequence development and reconstruction, intervention-specific protocols and sequences are explored allowing continuous MR guidance.
Prototypical sequences are implemented allowing short latencies and high frame rates at a high tumor contrast. An acceleration on the application of parallel imaging also is, for example, achieved by novel methods of "compressed sensing".
During percutaneous tumor ablation, the ablation process should continuously be monitored and adjusted, if necessary. The MR technology provides an unique opportunity to acquire physical parameters such as diffusion, conductivity or elastography in addition to the anatomical imaging. Therefore, in AP 2 "Imaging for therapy monitoring", the research group deals with the evaluation and implementation of selected methods for therapy monitoring in cooperation with the project partner Siemens Medizintechnik GmbH. Regarding the ablation, the thermometry plays a central role which should be explored further and which should be adapted and evaluated preclinically.
The focus of the AP 3 "Instrument Tracking" is on the study of a new type of intuitive instrument tracking with the help of optical Moiré Phase Tracking Systems (Metria Innovation Inc.), which will enable an efficient interventional workflow (trajectory, needle placement, verification, therapy control). Among other things, in cooperation with the project partner Siemens Medizintechnik GmbH, the software "Interactive Front End", which is a first technical implementation for the planning and implementation of an effective interventional workflow for the combination of the representation of imaging, tool and its trajectory, should be extended.
