objectives

The course is aimed at students interested in medical working in the technical engineering with the application field of medicine. In this engineering degree program, the students acquire an in-depth knowledge in the fields of mathematics, physics, electrical engineering and computer science, which is extremely important to the diverse applications in the field of medical technology to be able to process. Building on core subjects in the medical basic knowledge in medical technology and their essential subject areas taught. From the first semester medical and biological basics are taught in parallel with the technical basics. Later in the study, especially the application is focused primarily in the areas of research represented at the OVGU. These include the medical imaging and physics, minimally-invasive technologies, telemedicine, computer-assisted surgery or the medical image processing and visualization.

Career perspectives

For medical engineers, many different career paths are open, all characterized by excellent career prospects, e.g.:

  • Technician (care and maintenance of technical equipment in hospitals and doctors' offices)
  • Product Manager (sales, service, marketing for medical devices and equipment)
  • Software developer (programming, design of software tools for use with medical devices)
  • Development Engineer (removal of software development testing, testing of hardware components of medical devices)
  • System Administrator (maintenance of the IT infrastructure of hospitals, for example)
  • Quality engineering (quality assurance in the development of medical devices and optimization of development processes)
  • Research (in mechatronics, electrical engineering, software development with medical application focus)

Competencies and Interests Required

Students should bring both solid technical and scientific knowledge as well as no fear of mathematical tasks. At the same enthusiasm for the exciting field of application of technology in medicine and interest in medical basics (anatomy, biochemistry, etc.) is important.

The focus of the course is on the engineering sciences such as electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science and their applications in medical technology. The ability to recognize problems, describe and develop technical solutions will later be an essential part of working in the medical industry. Since working in the medical is very interdisciplinary, the candidate should have interest in learning about new topics, mainly but not only refers to the medical subject group.

Futher Information

This program is divided into compulsory and elective modules. The compulsory subjects are from the subject groups of STEM principles (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology), the Medical and Biological modules, core subjects of medical and non-technical subjects. Advanced Courses in medical technology or research projects serve as elective modules. In addition, an internship and the thesis are provided in the last semester.
