The genesis of a proven vascular pathology can usually only be clarified inadequately by angiographic methods, since an assessment of the vessel wall layers are not possible. However, this is of great interest to treat vascular diseases. The catheter-based intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are currently the only methods for the assessment of wall texture. New opportunities may result from catheter-based terahertz imaging.
