Improvement of image quality and patient safety in of 3D imaging at the C-arm

Nowadays, modern 3D angiography systems offer in addition to standard functions of contrast-enhanced angiography and fluoroscopy for catheter navigation numerous diagnostic functions, such as tomographic imaging of vessels (3D rotational angiography) and CT imaging, but still with insufficient soft tissue contrast for adequate valid diagnostics. First approaches for functional imaging such as blood flow or perfusion analysis also become available. However, the rotational speed of the C-arm is very slow compared to a standard CT. In addition, unavoidable movements of the patient by breathing or the heartbeat are further challenges.

Works in the field of angiography systems focus on the areas of compensation of image artifacts in CT-like imaging, and extend of its functionality. For artifact compensation are considered problems, which are caused by too few projections through truncated projections due to the too small size detectors, and by the scattered radiation. In order to track the success of the operation during the intervention, research for imaging of blood circulation in soft tissue (perfusion) is performed. These are carried out in close cooperation with Siemens Healthcare GmbH as a partner of STIMULATE Research Campus.
