Visualization station for high-precision orthopedic procedures

Subproject: Development of image processing elements of the real-time visualization station

In orthopedic surgery, the task often is to precisely insert an implant into a bone.

Therefore, medical navigation systems are used which continuously track the position of the instrument and the bone - to which markers are attached - with the help of a tracking system.

The implant is then displayed in the correct position and orientation on a preoperatively recorded 3D CT data set, generating the impression of a real-time imaging.

Surgery-related shifts of the bones and the markers lead to large inaccuracies in these navigation systems.

 

This can be solved by the use of an intraoperative CT housing a current 3D data set.

Disadvantages are the additional radiation exposure and the significant additional costs of such a CT.

The aim of this project is to develop a visualization station, which, with the help of X-rays - which are created intraoperatively with the help of a C-arm existing in each operating room– updates the preoperative 3D image and precisely fades in implants and bones.
