Diseases of the spinal column and associated complaints represent one of the greatest health economic challenges of an increasingly ageing society. The state of Saxony-Anhalt is disproportionately affected due to its demographic development. A large number of recent publications reveal that a valid, objective and reliable radiological analysis of the spine is a central prerequisite for effective diagnosis and treatment of spinal diseases in everyday clinical practice.
Precise analytical methods are urgently needed for evidence-based diagnosis and treatment and as an essential contribution to clinical research. Therefore, the aim of this project is to explore methods for a patient-friendly, automated analysis of radiological image data, which lead to an exact and objective determination and visualization of clinically highly relevant parameters in all anatomical levels. In the medium term, the results of this research project should lead to a medical software platform which, integrated into everyday clinical practice, automatically allows the physician to perform a comprehensive functional and morphological characterization of the patient using standard radiographic images.
