Fusion of ultrasound and X-ray imaging

Structural heart diseases are more and more frequently treated intravascular. Catheter-based interventions benefit from both, fluoroscopy and ultrasound images to navigate guidewires, catheters and instruments to the destination. In this process, fluoroscopy provides excellent images of instruments and vessels. However, going through the projection of a 3D space on a 2D image plane a lot of information is lost. Ultrasound provides real-time images in 3D, but the images are significantly noisier. Therefore, both imaging methods are to be regarded as complementary and are often used together in catheter-based processes. Siemens is currently developing an application software that can merge ultrasound and X-ray images. The aim of the work package is to check the safety, accuracy and manageability of the application in a realistic environment.
