BioMedical Design program at INNO-X Healthcare, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University
Abstract
When INNO-X Healthcare in 2013 established the BioMedical Design program, inspired by the renowned Biodesign program at Stanford University, it was one of the first of its kind in Europe. INNO-X Healthcare is closely connected to the regional healthcare sector, since the unit is a part of the Health Faculty at Aarhus University. This ensures direct access to the different hospitals in the Central Denmark region, including Aarhus University Hospital where more than 800.000 patients are treated every year. This access provides otherwise unattainable knowledge, data and insights that we use to develop and improve our different educational programs, that are all based on the BioMedical Design program. Through these educational programs we conduct our principal activity, as we teach the participants the skills and competencies they need to conduct healthcare innovation in the 21st century.
Besides our educational focus, we are involved in a research project with the purpose of identifying what competencies that are required in order for individuals to conduct innovation within the healthcare area, and to which extent the participants acquire these competencies through our educational programs.
This lecture will serve as an introduction to our unique Mixed Methods Innovation Model which we apply to encompass the Biodesign inspired approach as well as other innovation methodologies required to instigate need-based and evidence-driven innovation in healthcare.
