Vortragstitel: „Modulation of the brain visual system by non-invasive
brain current stimulation“.
Abstract
The brain controls mental functions by electrophysiological activity of billions of brain cells. But these activities need to be coordinated by synchronization throughout the brain´s functional network. Damage of the brain, or loss of input, can disturb this synchronization and impair mental functions such as vision, hearing or movement coordination. This lecture will introduce new techniques to both monitor brain functional network activity and recently developed techniques to modulate the brain networks by delivering non-invasively pulsed (synchronizing) currents for brain stimulation. Using the model of partial blindness in patients with damage to the visual system of the optic nerve and brain the role of brain plasticity and its role in recovery and restoration of vision can be studied. By re-establishing the brain functional connectivity, this treatment restores some of the lost vision in patients and helps them to see better again, a new treatment for partial blindness.
