Abstract:
Abstract With increasing computational resources, more and more engineering methods are applied to medical-related problems in order to support physicians. One prominent example is the development of virtual stent deployment techniques for cardio-vascular diseases that allow a numerical reproduction of treatment scenarios at no risk for the individual patient. Particularly, the endovascular placement of flow-diverting devices in intracranial aneurysms is addressed in the present work, since a successful outcome of the intervention is crucial for the patient’s quality of life. This chapter provides an overview of recent stenting approaches after the medical background of the permanent vessel dilations is introduced. Since the corresponding methodologies are based on assumptions as well as simplifications, validation studies are presented afterwards. To demonstrate the applicability of a particular stenting technique, two advanced examples are presented, which consider treatment improvements and deployment risks, respectively. Finally, the chances and limitations of the computer-assisted methods are discussed.
